Beauty and Decay

Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College

Thu, Nov 15, 2012, 9:30am - noon

Tickets: 35 to 45

This event is co-sponsored with the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD credit available)

Are you stressed by a constant quest for perfection in garden design? Some of the most beautiful gardens and landscapes include an element of imperfection. Sit back, relax, and learn to work with a kind of beauty that celebrates natural process, simplicity, imbalance, and the inexorable passing of time. This thought-provoking lecture, reflection, and discussion will be led by the inspiring and provocative landscape architect, Gary Smith.

Those attending will be encouraged to take part in a question and answer session which will focus on how wabi-sabi can translate into the designs of our gardens. Wabi-sabi is the Japanese aesthetic, or the acceptance, of transience and that beauty is imperfect. Gary is not often in town, so don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to learn from him and network with design professionals. Limited to 40.

Registration fee: $45 Members of the Scott Arboretum and APLD: $35
